Hurricane season has already begun and there are state-run policies in East and Gulf coast states such as Florida and Massachusetts. For a high price these policies offer little coverage but if you had many losses that were not covered in your previous policy, then you need a “all risk” policy and not the one with “named perils.”
Make sure you have photos and receipts of all household items. In this way you can prove the work of your property to your insurance company. Basic homeowners insurance is required for everyone, as this covers damage by rain that gets into wind damaged areas, fire vandalism and theft.
Typically, homeowners insurance will cover 50% of the value of personal property that is within your house. Additional living expenses are also covered in most insurances so you can stay in a hotel and eat out while repairs are being done to your home. Hail and wind damage should also be included and if it is not, get a separate one for that. Flood insurance is important is you are in a flood prone area as this insurance covers damages done by tides, waves, lakes and rivers that overflow and the runoff of groundwater. Auto insurance will cover car damage done by hurricanes.
